Can tracking buses with GPS keep your kids safer this year?

    Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

…the Pike County School system in Troy, Alabama believes it can.

According to the local newspaper today, the Pike County School system has installed GPS phones on all of its buses this year. The Sprint Nextel phones run TeleNav Track and allow the transportation department to monitor where each bus is during the day as well as keep detailed mileage reports for each bus.

If needed, the school officials can notify parents of the whereabouts of each bus without having to call each driver to determine their location.

According to the Pike County transportation department, buses in other places have been hijacked so this system helps prevent similar incidents happening in their school district.

The Pike County School system is not alone in using GPS on school buses. The Anaheim Union High School District and the Napa Valley Unified School District (both in California) are also using GPS to improve safety, efficiency and communication with concerned parents.

What do you think? Does GPS on school buses improve safety for kids? Would you feel better knowing that your child’s bus had GPS?

Report Indicates GPS Solutions Deliver Substantial ROI to Businesses

TeleNav Track Delivers Location Information from a Mobile Handset to an easy to view Web-based system

TeleNav Track Delivers Location Information from a Mobile Handset to an easy to view Web-based system

As some of you may know, in addition to the consumer turn-by-turn navigation applications we develop here at TeleNav, we also develop a suite of location-based products for business customers called TeleNav Track. These products range from our “LITE” solutions that provide the back office, through a Web-based interface, with location information for mobile workers and resources to our Premium services which build on the capabilities of the LITE services by providing deeper operational tools such as wireless timecard entry and form completion, mileage tracking and vehicle diagnostic monitoring right from the field.

We currently have approximately 9,000 organizations using our TeleNav Track products through our carrier partners AT&T and Sprint and we’re constantly receiving feedback from our customers explaining how the improved visibility into the location of their mobile workforce has cut costs through reduced mileage, more efficient dispatching and better customer service. Check out some of our case studies.

But don’t just take our word for it. A recent report from Aberdeen Group  provides the results of a survey of companies using GPS enabled services and the findings indicate that GPS services are certainly providing substantial ROI for businesses. This TMCnet article outlines some of the survey findings.

According to Aberdeen Group, use of GPS enabled solutions by businesses with mobile workers and resources has reduced idle time and increased fleet utilization. The survey results indicated that these companies have experienced substantial reduction in fuel costs and cut their miles driven by nearly one-third. Reduced time spent behind the wheel means more time on the job site, which might also explain why these companies have experienced a 23 percent increase in workforce productivity.

Our customers have reported similar ROI after implementing TeleNav Track into their operations. This ROI is likely the reason Aberdeen Group reports that monitoring of workers and vehicles by companies responding to the research have increased by 12 percent over last year’s figures. Aberdeen Group expects that number to continue to rise as more companies look to benefit from integrating location information into their operations.

If you’re a small business owner with mobile employees or the manager of a large fleet, now may be a good time to look into location-based solutions. In the current economy, any solution that has been proven to lower operating costs could be a wise investment.

AT&T Expands TeleNav Track GPS Services

    Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

We’re excited to announce with AT&T today the expansion of TeleNav Track for businesses.

Later this month, AT&T customers with mobile workers will have the option of using TeleNav Track LITE - a version of our service that does not require GPS nor additional software on AT&T devices including nearly all AT&T mobile phones, laptop cards and wireless equipped notebooks.

With TeleNav Track LITE, business managers can monitor their mobile workforce and resources on a Web-based map, even when they are inside buildings. Whether you have a small construction business or are an IT or department manager at a large enterprise organization, knowing where your mobile employees are can be extremely beneficial. For example, by analyzing routes and time spent on various job sites, managers can determine where their businesses can be more efficient. In addition, if dispatchers know where workers are, they can better communicate with customers to provide updates on delivery or service times.

AT&T’s director of industry solutions, Igor Glubochansky, said that by expanding AT&T’s TeleNav Track portfolio, the company is able to provide customers of all sizes with the ability to leverage mobile resource management solutions to gain a competitive advantage.

Are you using tracking services in your business? How have they improved your operations or customer service?

Frost & Sullivan Names TeleNav Track Best Mobile Resource Management Solution on a Handheld Device

    Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Does it drive you crazy when a delivery or service company gives you a five hour timeframe for when they will show up at your house? Well, if you thought you loved us before, get a load of us now … TeleNav has developed a technology called TeleNav Track that helps companies better manage mobile workers so they can work more efficiently and better track their locations using their mobile phones. This makes everyone’s lives a little easier as shipments can be tracked better, companies can easily be made aware of their workers’ locations and the mobile workforce can complete timecards, business orders and more without having to make a trip into the office.

TeleNav Track is used by thousands of organizations from local HVAC companies like One Hour Air and Conditioning, to government departments like the City of New York, to large enterprise companies like CR England.

Last night, we were thrilled to find out that industry analyst firm Frost & Sullivan named our TeleNav Track solution as the ‘Best Mobile Resource Management (MRM) Solution on a Handheld Device’ as part of its 2009 North American Mobility Awards. This is the second year in a row TeleNav Track has won the award.

It’s clear TeleNav Track has really impressed Frost & Sullivan’s analysts. Research analyst Jeanine Sterling explained why she felt TeleNav Track was the best solution, saying, “In our side by side comparisons, TeleNav Track clearly offers the most robust functionality . . .” We’re looking forward to impressing the analysts again for next year’s awards.

If you’re a business owner with a mobile workforce, check out TeleNav Track and learn more about how it can reduce your costs and improve your workers’ efficiency. For those of you who have received those long delivery or service setup windows, you might want to suggest they use TeleNav Track to give you a better experience.

TeleNav Track GPS Helps Ariz. HVAC Company Reach Near 100% On-Time Arrival to Customer Locations

    Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

We announced today an amazing success story of a company in Gilbert, Arizona that is using TeleNav Track to help improve customer service.

The company, One Hour Conditioning & Heating, is a residential and commercial cooling and heating service provider. One Hour’s slogan is ‘always on time or you don’t pay a dime’ which means that it is important to the company that their technicians arrive to customers’ locations on time or else they lose a lot of money.

Before they used TeleNav Track on their cell phones, One Hour technicians would do everything by paper or phone calls - including clock in and out of work, gather and relay job information, and get to and from jobs. Now, it is all done through TeleNav Track. They can clock in and out directly from their phone, send and receive job information from managers through the wireless forms on their phone, and also get GPS navigation to each job site on their phone.

Because they use TeleNav Track, One Hour technicians are now on time to customers 99.99% of the time. Can you say that about any technician that comes to your house? Not only does this save One Hour a lot of money but it makes their customers happy because they know they can count on the company to meet their deadline.

Here is another good example of how TeleNav Track is helping a satellite company reach customers on time.

The Tundra is a rugged clamshell phone which includes push to talk (PTT), AT&T Navigator powered by TeleNav and TeleNav Track. It’s a great phone for those of you who need something that can withstand the elements or harsh working conditions.

In other CES news, PC World is predicting that HDTV and mobile gear will be the key themes for this year’s show. According to the magazine, you can expect to see merging of content delivery and hardware - such as plasma TV’s with built-in online movie streaming. The publication also listed TeleNav Shotgun as an example of a new trend of GPS devices with wireless/Internet connections.

We’ll be heading down to Vegas this week to check out all the new gadgets and to make some noise of our own. We look forward to seeing you all there and will keep you posted on what’s happening from right here on our blog!

Ask HP Anything: HP Answers Your Questions

    Friday, November 7th, 2008

We received two questions this week for the “Ask HP (our CEO) Anything” column. See below for HP’s answers. Please keep them coming! As a reminder, you can ask your question below or just send me an email at marybethl (at) telenav.com.

Josh: HP, keeping in mind that the average person spends most of their time indoors, if GPS worked as reliably indoors as it does outdoors, how would Telenav take advantage of this, today?  In 2 years?

HP: Josh, thanks for your question. There are a few ways that our services may leverage indoor location capabilities. For example, TeleNav Track allows for dispatchers to see mobile employees while they are out on the road - this means they can better route them to customers. This is all done through GPS since it is outdoors. But imagine if you were a very large enterprise organization that had multiple buildings on one large campus? If you managed the facilities for this campus, you might want to also know where your technicians were while they serviced the various buildings. Once they are indoors, it is harder to do this with GPS. Teams could also better find each other from level to level within buildings.

On a more consumer-level, indoor location technology could certainly be integrated with social networking services like our Whereboutz Facebook application. Say my daughter is shopping at the mall with her friends - now she could send them all a text message with her location (”at The Gap”) and not have to actually manually type in the location.

The possibilities are endless and we are certainly keeping on top of indoor location-aware technology so that we can leverage it as much as possible to provide even more value to our customers.

John R. Price: we keep hearing that telenav will be available for iPhone.  i’m planning on changing all our company phones to iPhone (we’re all MAC users, including all my lab folks) since i have everybody on AT&T already but i’m holding off until i know about some the apps AND telenav.  For me, telenav is critical. So, what’s the scoop?

HP: John, first I’d like to say thanks for being such a loyal customer and I’m thrilled that you are pleased with the service and find it useful for your business needs. If you have any feedback on features that you especially find useful or if you have ideas on how we can improve the service, please let us know. We are always open to the feedback.

Regarding the iPhone - everyone (myself included!) is excited to get GPS navigation on the iPhone but I am sure you can understand that, in general, we cannot announce anything until it’s available. Please keep an eye on our blog (we have an RSS feed if that’s easiest) for news of all our phone launches - we will notify customers here as soon as we can about when our service launches on new phones. If you use Twitter or Facebook, you can also get up-to-the minute TeleNav news alerts that way as well. There are links on this blog to follow us on Twitter and Facebook.

Thanks again for the questions and have a great weekend.

TeleNav Helps The Cable … er Satellite … Guy

    Friday, October 31st, 2008

Wouldn’t it be nice if your cable guy was actually on time or provided you with an exact service time rather than a 4-8 hour window?

TeleNav is helping to make this happen. Satellites Unlimited, the 3rd largest DISH Network provider, is using TeleNav Track on 240 AT&T phones.

All of those service techs use TeleNav Track for GPS navigation and the company estimates each service rep is able to save 30-60 min out of their day because of it. This results in more efficient customer care.

It also means that Satellites Unlimited has been able to save money on gas because drivers can be more efficiently routed to customers. If you’re a business owner, you can immediately see the benefit in optimized routing.

Satellites Unlimited hopes to expand its use of TeleNav Track to the rest of its 240 employees within in the next year or two.

Businesses Using GPS to Decrease Operational Budgets Despite Rising Fuel and Shipping Costs

    Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Aberdeen released an interesting study yesterday on fleet operations and the rising costs of fuel and shipping charges.

According to their report (sponsored by TeleNav) 50% of the logistics professionals surveyed are focused - right now - on improving routing and scheduling of their fleets in order to offset rising operational costs.

Almost 100% of them said they will be reviewing and improving fleet operations in the next 12-24 months.

Those companies which Aberdeen entitles "Best-in-Class" (have implemented technology to improve their operations) have been able to reduce safety incidents by 5% and decrease overall freight spend by 1%, despite overall rising costs in the industry.

Route optimization, dispatching, scheduling and fleet tracking are all available through TeleNav Track on GPS-enabled cell phones. TeleNav is working with Aberdeen to help educate companies on how to implement this technology and save on costs. We’re hosting a Webinar with Aberdeen on this topic on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 10am PT. You can find more information and register here.

As a side note, we also announced yesterday another new device that supports TeleNav Track. It is the Intermec CN3 (pictured here). Click here to get more information on this announcement.
