TeleNav Shotgun Now Includes Mileage Tracking and Business Reviews/Ratings
Jan 20th
Today we announced that TeleNav Shotgun, our connected GPS navigation device for business travelers, is sporting some new features to make traveling even easier.
TeleNav Shotgun now includes mileage tracking and business reviews/ratings.
Mileage tracking allows customers the ability to track miles driven using their TeleNav Shotgun. A driver can record mileage on specific routes or can simply start and stop tracking miles at any time when receiving turn-by-turn navigation or while in ‘follow me’ map mode. Later, from their PC, they can log into My TeleNav and download reports in Excel or Adobe – making expense reporting so much easier.
We also launched business reviews so users can now look up reviews and ratings on places like restaurants, hotels, shopping malls, bakeries, grocery stores, hospitals and museums. They can also rate the businesses themselves directly from their TeleNav Shotgun.
AT&T and Motorola Launch the Tundra in Preparation for CES
Jan 6th
AT&T and Motorola unveiled the “Tundra” today in advance of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) later this week in Las Vegas.
The Tundra is a rugged clamshell phone which includes push to talk (PTT), AT&T Navigator powered by TeleNav and TeleNav Track. It’s a great phone for those of you who need something that can withstand the elements or harsh working conditions.
In other CES news, PC World is predicting that HDTV and mobile gear will be the key themes for this year’s show. According to the magazine, you can expect to see merging of content delivery and hardware – such as plasma TV’s with built-in online movie streaming. The publication also listed TeleNav Shotgun as an example of a new trend of GPS devices with wireless/Internet connections.
We’ll be heading down to Vegas this week to check out all the new gadgets and to make some noise of our own. We look forward to seeing you all there and will keep you posted on what’s happening from right here on our blog!
The Science of Keeping Maps and Business Listings Up to Date
Jan 5th
One of the major benefits of having a GPS navigation service that is Internet-connected (such as TeleNav GPS Navigator or TeleNav Shotgun with TeleNav Connected Service) is that you don’t have to worry about manually updating maps or business listings. Instead, this happens automatically for you because the information is stored on our server rather than on your phone or on your Shotgun.
As drivers, you may not think about what it takes to keep your phone or GPS device up to date with changing roads, construction and new businesses. Just think about changes in your city alone – or even on your block – new construction is everywhere and businesses go in and (unfortunately) out of business on nearly a daily basis.
To keep up with these ongoing changes, we work with a variety of leading content providers including Tele Atlas and NAVTEQ. Here is a link to an interesting article in Popular Science on how Tele Atlas gathers and maintains map content.
According to the article, Tele Atlas estimates that 10 to 15 percent of the areas it maps differ from year to year because of construction and other changes. To monitor this, Tele Atlas uses 50 mapping vans (pictured here) that travel the country taking pictures every 10 feet. Those vans covered 350,000 miles last year alone, sending data to Tele Atlas to be analyzed and distributed to partners like TeleNav.
Next time you’re on the road, take a look around at the new roadway and building construction. Although these changes are happening more quickly than ever, advances in technology allow us to keep up and keep you headed in the right direction.
