… you can make it anywhere. Or so they say anyways.
Where am I talking about? Of course, I’m talking about one of America’s greatest cities – New York City!
But as great of a city as it is, for a lot of out-of-towner who come to visit, they quickly discover one thing; traversing the Big Apple can be a very CHAOTIC experience. Beyond just having to compete with literally millions of people in every direction, in New York, there’s also all of the cars, buses, & cabs on the roads & of course, the maze that is the NYC subway system. Thankfully though, in spots where you just need to walk a few blocks to your destination, if you’re a TeleNav user, we’ve got you covered.
Enter in “Pedestrian” Mode.
What is Pedestrian Mode? Most of the time when you’re navigating in your car, it’s likely you choose the “fastest” route as the option but what if you’re want to get somewhere on foot? That’s where Pedestrian mode comes in. With Pedestrian Mode set as your routing style, it will will create the best path to your destination for travel on foot. This comes in handy for those situations where you’re in a big city & walking, rather than driving, is the best way to get around – like in New York City (we’ve come full circle, people). ;)
Want to know how to set up Pedestrian Mode? Check out this short video for how to set it up & watch as it takes us to one of New York’s most famous landmarks!
With so many exciting things happening at TeleNav these days, we decided to hit the road and show everyone what we’ve been working on here in Sunnyvale. Right now, Mary Beth Lowell and I are in New York City preparing for tomorrow evening’s Pepcom Digital Experience event. The gang at Pepcom always hosts wonderful events, so we’re certainly looking forward to the festivities and meeting with many of the reporters living in the New York area.
If any reporters in the area have time to grab a drink and chat with Mary Beth and me about what we’ve got going on at TeleNav these days in a little less crowded environment than the Pepcom event, drop us a line and we’d be happy to meet up today or tomorrow while we’re in the city.

Today we announced that New York City is using TeleNav Track to help clean up the city. Here’s a link to a news story and video on the program.
City inspectors drive three-wheeled scooters around the city looking for things like graffiti, potholes and garbage. When they see incidents like this, they enter it into their AT&T BlackBerry and our service marks the location using GPS. This information is then sent to the appropriate organization within the city to take care of the problems.
This use of TeleNav Track is pretty ingenious and is a great example of how GPS can be a technologically advanced solution for an age-old problem. NYC’s program (called SCOUT – short for Street Conditions Observation Unit) is the brainchild of Mayor Bloomberg but could certainly be mimicked in other cities.
Some of this has to do with air and water quality which TeleNav Track unfortunately won’t fix but it also takes into account things like pollution and sanitation. Perhaps some of these cities can consider looking at NYC’s program as a best practice.
Kudos to NYC which is at the very bottom of this list!
