NY Times: “Are GPS Devices Going the Way of the Tape Deck?”

    Wednesday, July 8th, 2009
    AT&T Navigator on the iPhone

Have you made the switch from a dedicated GPS device to using GPS navigation on your smartphone?

This morning, the New York Times reported that smartphones are ‘beginning to displace’ standalone GPS devices as a more convenient way to get GPS navigation. The paper cited a recent report from Compete which asserted that more than 40 percent of all smartphone users are using GPS turn-by-turn on their device (for iPhone users its up to 80 percent!). The article also noted that sales of traditional GPS units have fallen sharply recently. (UPDATE: we are looking for the original Compete study but this may also include mapping services without turn-by-turn navigation)

Separately, Gartner published a report this week stating that the number of location-based services (LBS) subscribers will double in 2009 to reach nearly 96 million by the end of the year.

It goes without saying (but we’ll say it anyway) that we have always been believers of the potential of GPS navigation and other location-based services on phones - this was the vision of our founders when they started the company nearly 10 years ago. TeleNav services have been popular on BlackBerry smartphones for awhile but new smartphones, like the Sprint Palm Pre and the iPhone have also made a big difference. With large touch screens, these devices are very similar in size to many standalone GPS devices and can provide very nice and easy-to-follow on-screen mapping. (We’ve come a long way from the earliest versions of our service - check out this YouTube video one of our founders recently posted of TeleNav GPS Navigator v. 1.2 from 2002.)

I read a lot of comments from our customers over Twitter or on this blog that they have made the switch from standalone GPS devices to using our GPS navigation on their smartphone. What about you? Are you one of the 40 percent? Why or why not?

AT&T Navigator (powered by TeleNav) Now Available on the iPhone!

    AT&T Navigator on the iPhone

    AT&T Navigator on the iPhone

We know that many of you have been waiting to hear when we would be launching on the Apple iPhone. Well, after some hints that we were working on an application, we’re very excited to announce with our partner AT&T that AT&T Navigator (powered by TeleNav) is available today for $9.99/mo. on Apple’s App Store.

iPhone owners may be aware that the recently launched OS 3.0 software update enables turn-by-turn navigation right from the phone, moving beyond the traditional mapping services previously available on the iPhone to provide a comprehensive voice-guided, turn-by-turn navigation experience. Here at TeleNav, we’ve become the leader in developing navigation applications for hundreds of mobile phones and have used our expertise in this area to work with AT&T to develop a great iPhone application that delivers the experience you’ve come to associate with AT&T Navigator and TeleNav products. Here are just a few of the features AT&T Navigator brings to your iPhone:

    • An always up-to-date experience - going beyond what you get with most personal navigation devices, AT&T Navigator for the iPhone uses the phone’s connectivity to ensure the maps and point of interest databases you’re depending on are up-to-date, with updates provided every three months
    • Turn-by-turn, voice guidance - unlike map services iPhone users have used in the past, AT&T Navigator incorporates turn-by-turn, voice-guided directions. Now you can go beyond a basic map view of your location and receive guidance along your entire route, factoring in elements such as traffic and your personal route preferences. Your iPhone is instantly turned into a powerful personal navigation device
    • Real-time traffic information - AT&T Navigator for the iPhone provides real-time traffic information and enables you to re-route around traffic at the push of a button
    • Gas Price Information - utilizing your iPhone’s connectivity, AT&T Navigator can instantly return results for gas prices in your area, even breaking it down by grade. If gas is 10 cents/gallon cheaper a mile down the road, you’ll know about it and save at the pump
    • Millions of Points of Interest - iPhone owners will have access to more than 10 million points of interest with AT&T Navigator, ranging from restaurants to ATMs to Wi-Fi hotspots. No matter where you’re traveling, you will have instant access to any business you may need to locate and easily navigate to it
    • Voice entry - AT&T Navigator for the iPhone incorporates voice entry, so not only can you type in an address or business, but with a single touch of the screen, you can speak it and the application will recognize the location and get you started on your way
    • Planning ahead - although AT&T Navigator can provide directions whenever you need them, we know that some of you like to plan ahead. With the iPhone application, you can preplan online and send addresses and business listings from your computer to your phone. The next time you start the application, the addresses will be available and ready for you to navigate to

Those are only a few of the features included in the application, so we encourage all of you iPhone owners to try the application for yourself. Once you try the application, please provide us with your feedback and be sure to rate the application on the App Store. We’re continually looking for feedback and ways to build upon our products.

We hope you enjoy AT&T Navigator on the iPhone and as mentioned before, we are certainly excited to be able to announce that the application is now live on the App Store. Click here to read today’s announcement.

    TeleNav iPhone Update

We don’t have an official announcement today regarding the iPhone but will soon. So we ask that you keep following our news here or on Twitter as we will keep you updated on iPhone news that way.

Thanks again for all of your ongoing support and we welcome your feedback as always.

Ask HP Anything: HP Answers Your Questions

    Friday, November 7th, 2008

We received two questions this week for the “Ask HP (our CEO) Anything” column. See below for HP’s answers. Please keep them coming! As a reminder, you can ask your question below or just send me an email at marybethl (at) telenav.com.

Josh: HP, keeping in mind that the average person spends most of their time indoors, if GPS worked as reliably indoors as it does outdoors, how would Telenav take advantage of this, today?  In 2 years?

HP: Josh, thanks for your question. There are a few ways that our services may leverage indoor location capabilities. For example, TeleNav Track allows for dispatchers to see mobile employees while they are out on the road - this means they can better route them to customers. This is all done through GPS since it is outdoors. But imagine if you were a very large enterprise organization that had multiple buildings on one large campus? If you managed the facilities for this campus, you might want to also know where your technicians were while they serviced the various buildings. Once they are indoors, it is harder to do this with GPS. Teams could also better find each other from level to level within buildings.

On a more consumer-level, indoor location technology could certainly be integrated with social networking services like our Whereboutz Facebook application. Say my daughter is shopping at the mall with her friends - now she could send them all a text message with her location (”at The Gap”) and not have to actually manually type in the location.

The possibilities are endless and we are certainly keeping on top of indoor location-aware technology so that we can leverage it as much as possible to provide even more value to our customers.

John R. Price: we keep hearing that telenav will be available for iPhone.  i’m planning on changing all our company phones to iPhone (we’re all MAC users, including all my lab folks) since i have everybody on AT&T already but i’m holding off until i know about some the apps AND telenav.  For me, telenav is critical. So, what’s the scoop?

HP: John, first I’d like to say thanks for being such a loyal customer and I’m thrilled that you are pleased with the service and find it useful for your business needs. If you have any feedback on features that you especially find useful or if you have ideas on how we can improve the service, please let us know. We are always open to the feedback.

Regarding the iPhone - everyone (myself included!) is excited to get GPS navigation on the iPhone but I am sure you can understand that, in general, we cannot announce anything until it’s available. Please keep an eye on our blog (we have an RSS feed if that’s easiest) for news of all our phone launches - we will notify customers here as soon as we can about when our service launches on new phones. If you use Twitter or Facebook, you can also get up-to-the minute TeleNav news alerts that way as well. There are links on this blog to follow us on Twitter and Facebook.

Thanks again for the questions and have a great weekend.

Analyst Report: Geotagging to Soon Be Available on All Cameras

    Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Author - Mary Beth Lowell - Communications Manager

GeotaggingLooks like our CTO knew what he was talking about when he blogged a few weeks ago about the increasing popularity of geotagging.

Wireless Week reported today on a study from IMS Research which states that the increasing usage of GPS chips in laptops and cameras is creating a new (albeit, smaller) industry for GPS services. The analyst quoted predicts a six-fold growth in the "non-cellular" GPS market (time frame not noted in the article).

Regarding geotagging specifically, the report includes a prediction that GPS will be adopted across the entire camera market, "from holiday makers to professionals." It also highlights online services like Panoramio which allows consumers to host their geotagged photos.

Not included in the article, but perhaps included in the report, is the convergence of mobile phones, GPS and image capabilities. For example, the new iPhone has geotagging capabilities. With the popularity of devices like the iPhone, it will be interesting to see if the analyst’s predictions pan out or if this just means additional growth for the cellular GPS market.

Using GPS and the iPhone to Track Your Runs

    Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Author - Mary Beth Lowell - Communications Manager

Runkeeper_screenshotAround the beginning of the year, I wrote a post about using GPS to keep up with your New Year’s resolutions. There are multiple devices that you can use to do this whether or not you’re a runner, walker, hiker, etc.

I mentioned one cell phone-based application that I’ve used in the past while running called Bones in Motion. It’s especially great for those who carry their phones with them anyway while running. (I tend to do this for safety reasons although it’s not as easy as wearing a GPS watch).

Now that the new iPhone has GPS, it was only a matter of time before a similar application launched for the iPhone. This one is called RunKeeper and, according to CNET, is designed by a company called FitnessKeeper.

I checked out the developer’s blog and it looks like the application is not quite available yet but is coming soon. I’m looking forward to trying it out - and now that I am running with a baby stroller, I don’t even have to worry about how to carry the phone.
