Do Rising Gas Prices Make Any Impact on Traffic? Only by 3%

    Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Traffic_2Our traffic partner, Inrix, published its National Traffic Scorecard Special Report yesterday.

Results show that 96 of the top 100 markets experienced a decrease in traffic for the first half of 2008 compared with the first half of 2007.

Nationwide, there was a 3% average decrease in travel times during peak hours.

The study did show, however, that two-thirds of consumers changed their driving habits as a result of higher gas prices.

Perhaps most interesting about the report was the ranking of cities when it came to finding a correlation between gas prices and traffic. You might think that cities with more commuters would have seen a decrease in traffic due to increased use of public transportation. However, LA, the worst congested city in America, ranked 20th; Chicago ranked 47th; Wash. DC ranked 53rd; and NYC ranked 69th.

Altanta ranked #1 - the city had one of the largest increases in gas prices (31% increase) which resulted in overall less traffic (4.4% decrease).

Businesses Using GPS to Decrease Operational Budgets Despite Rising Fuel and Shipping Costs

    Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Aberdeen released an interesting study yesterday on fleet operations and the rising costs of fuel and shipping charges.

According to their report (sponsored by TeleNav) 50% of the logistics professionals surveyed are focused - right now - on improving routing and scheduling of their fleets in order to offset rising operational costs.

Almost 100% of them said they will be reviewing and improving fleet operations in the next 12-24 months.

Those companies which Aberdeen entitles "Best-in-Class" (have implemented technology to improve their operations) have been able to reduce safety incidents by 5% and decrease overall freight spend by 1%, despite overall rising costs in the industry.

Route optimization, dispatching, scheduling and fleet tracking are all available through TeleNav Track on GPS-enabled cell phones. TeleNav is working with Aberdeen to help educate companies on how to implement this technology and save on costs. We’re hosting a Webinar with Aberdeen on this topic on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 10am PT. You can find more information and register here.

As a side note, we also announced yesterday another new device that supports TeleNav Track. It is the Intermec CN3 (pictured here). Click here to get more information on this announcement.

    Ready, Aim …

    Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Author - Daisy Luu - Technical Writer

Dscf4177In archery, instinctive shooters can hit a target simply by looking at it. The rest of us have to work on perfecting our aim. What may surprise people who have never shot an arrow before is that often, you have to aim at a point away from the target in order to hit it. The line of vision can be a deceiving thing.

How often do you go through life with a clear goal in mind, only to deviate from it a little way down the road? Five or ten years ago, did you picture you’d be where you are now? Have you taken a seque only to discover that it’s the beginning of a much more alluring road? Or do you find yourself wanting to return to your original plan?

Wouldn’t it be nice if the path of life came with GPS? Just key in your destination and prepare to drive yourself there. But then again, perhaps it’s not the destination, but the journey. When you’re too focused on the target, you miss the fun of getting there.

Setting a goal is good, but the element of surprise is often the spice of life. So take a second to prepare your gear. Hold your breath and brace yourself to begin. Maybe you’ll even find that you need to aim away from your target. And then, just let your arrow go.

Use GPS to Track Your Lunch

    Monday, October 6th, 2008

MobileexchangeIf you’re anything like me, getting away from your desk to take a lunch break can be a challenge. Although I know those pesky health experts recommend against it, I often find myself eating at my desk or taking only a 5-10 minute break to go grab something.

That’s why I love the idea that the "Only Burger" in Durham, NC has in mind for it’s Mobile Meals van - use GPS to let customers know when you’re on your way. It’s great for those office buildings that don’t have cafeterias or restaurants nearby (and people like me who are too lazy to make their own lunch).

Actually, I should say that I love half of the idea because, frankly, I’m not sure I could eat something - especially a burger - that was prepared in an Airstream RV - eww.

However, the idea of pairing GPS with front door food service is pretty cool. Can you imagine the mobile latte stand? Place your order online when they are near your building and then meet them at your front door when they arrive with your piping hot grande pumpkin spice latte.

If something like that were available near my office, I’m sure I’d spend much more money than I already do on coffee. Why isn’t this happening already?! I need my latte!

TeleNav Customers Seeking Cheap Gas - Usage of Price Lookup Tool Increases by 64%

    Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Telenav_gps_navigator_fuel_finder_2It’s not news that the current state of the economy is impacting everyone. But with Wall Street in crisis mode, the “pain at the pump” has fallen from headline news in the past few days. Despite that, it still remains a major daily expense for both consumers and businesses.

We have seen a growing trend among our customers in 2008 when it comes to gas prices. Use of the TeleNav GPS Navigator “Fuel Finder” feature continues to increase as customers keep on the lookout for the lowest priced gas stations in their area.

In fact, since the beginning of the year, we have seen a 64% increase in Fuel Finder use.

This tool is especially important in some of the hurricane and flood-ravaged areas of the Southeast which are currently experiencing major gas shortages. In this case, it may do more than just help them find the cheapest gas, it may help them find stations that have gas at all!

Using GPS to Track Your Greenness (Yes, that’s a Word)

    Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Author - Mary Beth Lowell - Communications Manager

PeirIf you thought buying organic, walking to work and recycling were enough to make you a "greener" person, you may want to test yourself using a new personal green "report card" called the Personal Environmental Impact Report (PEIR).

The fine folks at UCLA developed the report using information from users’ GPS phones to determine how green they really are.

Based on GPS data and algorithms, the report calculates whether users are driving or walking to work, stopped for fast food, polluted near a hospital, and how much smog they inhaled. The users (currently a small beta group of 30 people) can then upload this data to Facebook to share with friends. Of most importance is trends over time when it comes to smog exposure, fast food exposure, carbon impact and sensitive sites impact.

Don’t like this tool? Maybe you’ll like a similar one called Carbon Diem which also uses GPS and also will monitor whether you drive, fly, take the train or walk. It then calculates how much carbon you emitted and compares it against averages, eventually telling you if you are improving over time.

Whether it’s for personal use or business use, it looks like GPS may help us get a better indication of just how green we really are.

The other option is, of course, to just use the old-fashioned method of pen and paper records. You should know when you walked, drove, or flew, right? Or if you ate fast food today? For those of us who aren’t as organized, however, these GPS options may be something to consider.

    GPS for the Blind

    Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Author - Mary Beth Lowell - Communications Manager

Blindgpsmain_wideweb__470x3120_2If you’re not blind, it’s hard to imagine what life would be like without your eyesight. Some things we may consider simple - like getting your morning latte or going to the post office to drop off a package - create unique challenges for someone who is blind.

Technology can really make a difference in a blind person’s life, however. With the evolution of text-to-speech, using computers, phones and other gadgets is no longer considered an obstacle. In fact, it’s making a big improvement.

Here is a great story about a blind man in Sydney, Australia who is using GPS to help navigate his way around town (walking, of course). The service he uses is called Wayfinder Access and he is able to use it on his phone, free of charge from his guide dog service.

The system will provide him with audible directions (similar to TeleNav GPS Navigator in pedestrian mode) and also read out nearby points of interest - such as restaurants - and intersections.

The man profiled in this article doesn’t use this as a replacement for his guide dog, but more as a supplement to improve his way of life. For example, he says that now he visits nearby shops that he never even knew existed.

Just another good example of technology (and GPS!) improving our lives.
