    Thanks for Giving

    Friday, November 13th, 2009

As we approach Thanksgiving and TeleNav kicks-off our season of giving I am struck with the memory of my best Thanksgiving. I was living in Florida – 3,000 miles away from my family. I had to choose between taking time-off without pay and purchasing a flight I couldn’t afford or staying home and facing the holiday alone. I decided not to do either.

Instead of flying home or trying to wrangle up an invitation with nearby friends I decided to volunteer at a battered women’s shelter. A local chef volunteered his services to provide the meal that day. I and a handful of other volunteers happily served his meal while a stray volunteer, dressed as a clown, did face paintings for the kids.

When we were done with our duties the chef invited all of the volunteers over to his place for a Thanksgiving meal. I sat at the table with the rest of the rag-tag bunch who had come together and I had the best time I could remember. We laughed so hard, and even made balloon animals at the table after dinner!

It meant a lot to me to feel so welcome at a stranger’s table when I had no family nearby. For the rest of my years in Florida I hosted Thanksgiving dinner at my house for anyone I knew who didn’t have family in the area and it was great every year. Those holidays will always hold a very special place in my heart.

Those years are gone, but I still strive to give back by sharing my food and my time with Second Harvest Food Bank. I’m thankful for the opportunity to share what I can throughout the year and I’m very thankful that TeleNav has done so much to support this cause.

We know our customers are awesome, but we still love to hear about it from you. If you’re giving a gift that matters this holiday season please let us know which charities are your favorite to give back to.

Way Down to Louisiana, Down to New Orleans!

    Monday, October 26th, 2009

I have to admit that I’ve barely paid for my Asian adventure, but I’m such a travel bug that I’ve already started planning for my next trip. I’ve always wanted to go to New Orleans and this December I’m finally going.

As always, TeleNav has been a huge help to me in planning my trip. Since I’m planning to stay in the heart of the French Quarter and I won’t be renting a car for the duration of my trip, I’ve been making good use of TeleNav Maps to scout out locations within walking distance from my hotel.

The thing I’m looking forward to most in New Orelans is definitely the food, so my first priority was to make sure I’d be able to walk to Cafe du Monde for their famous beignets and cafe au lait with chicory. From beignets to the French Old Market, TeleNav Maps has helped me find everything I need for a great food lover’s vacation, including a couple of restaurants by the famed Emeril Lagasse. I’m still on the lookout for the best gumbo in the French Quarter so please let me know if you have any suggestions!

Of course New Orleans has a lot to offer aside from the food. I’m excited to take a mule drawn carriage through the French Quarter, listen to jazz at Jackson Square, explore the bayous of Jean Lafitte National Park and soak in the history of Oak Alley Plantation, not to mention the fabulous NOLA night life! And who knows, maybe I’ll even see a ghost at New Orleans Cemetery #1. Be sure to check back in January to find out!

Using TeleNav “Spots” to Share Locations With Other TeleNav Users

    Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Over the weekend I was daydreaming and experiencing a bit of nostalgia. You see I had the pleasure of going on my first trip to New York this past April. I still know a couple of friends who have yet to make it there. So I got to thinking, why don’t I suggest some hot spots and places for them to visit once they make their voyage to the Big Apple. I started posting my favorite New York hangouts on “My Spots” on the TeleNav website.

TeleNav “Spots” is a cool feature that allows you save locations of interest. Whether it is a tourist spot like New York, or a local pizza joint in your neighborhood, you can save it to TeleNav “Spots.” Central Park, Fao Schwartz, and Times Square, are some of my favorite places in New York that I have saved under “My Spots” in the TeleNav website.

    TeleNav Spots

By doing this I get to share my places of recommendation with TeleNav users, who can log into their account to view “Spots.” When viewing other “Spots” on the website added by users, I can post comments, suggestions or questions and see what others had to say about the place. I can also send the address of a place from “My Spots” directly to friend’s cell phones as a text message.

Rather than spend money to buy a travel guide for your next vacation or waste time flipping through the yellow pages for a new restaurant in town, take a moment to get directions and discover what your fellow TeleNav user thought of their most recent “Spots” all in one swoop.

Top 10 Scenic Drives in the U.S. - What is Missing?

    Friday, November 14th, 2008

Thanksgiving is just around the corner (I’m in shock too - wasn’t it July just last week?) and that means a nice long weekend for most of us.

Besides football, family gatherings and food (lots of food), you may be starting to think about what else you are going to do during those four glorious days off of work.

Some families like to go on road trips for the weekend … or perhaps they are forced to as they head over to grandma’s for turkey dinner. Either way, with all of the colors on the trees, Fall is a great time for a scenic road trip.

If you’re still researching for good ideas for road trips for the weekend, here is a list of “Top 10 Scenic Drives in the U.S.” from the good folks at Weather.com (they should know, right?):

    1. Blue Ridge Parkway
    2. Hana Highway
    3. Highway 1
    4. Highway 12
    5. Going-to-the-Sun Road
    1. Million Dollar Highway
    2. Red Rock Scenic Byway
    3. Seward Highway
    4. Sonoma and Napa Valleys
    5. US Route 1

    Painting it Pink

    Friday, October 31st, 2008

On Saturday, Oct. 25, TeleNav joined over 25,000 participants in the Bay Area Making Strides walk, hosted by the American Cancer Society. Previously only held in San Francisco, 2008 is the first year Making Strides was also held in San Jose. The five km. (3.1 mile) walk looped around the Guadalupe River Park trail. What a great time to use TeleNav GPS Navigator’s pedestrian mode!

Participants "painted the town pink," wearing the color as a symbol of Breast Cancer awareness. Volunteers stationed along the trail waved cheery pink pom-poms to cheer on walkers. The amount of energy and enthusiasm hung palpable in the air, and during the short 3-mile walk, TeleNav’ers caught up with each other outside the office and met each others’ friends and families.

TeleNav raised $1,540 for the Making Strides event! Visit this site for more information on how you can help.

Preplan Your Trip Online with “My TeleNav”

    Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

    Tn_comic_09082

Do you know you can preplan your trips online and send addresses to your phone for use with TeleNav GPS Navigator later?

It’s easy - go to www.telenav.com and click on “My TeleNav” which is on the top of the page.

You will need to know your phone number and your password. You should have received your password in SMS when you activated your TeleNav GPS Navigator account. If not, or if you want to change your password, please contact our customer care team.

On My TeleNav, you can look for businesses, save addresses, read restaurant reviews and even share locations with other people. Once you find a business or save an address, you can click on “send to phone” and they will be easily accessible in your “My Favorites” folder next time you launch TeleNav GPS Navigator.

This online tool is great for preplanning client meetings or even vacation destinations.

Have any tips for how we can improve it? Let us know!

Is Anyone Keeping an Eye on the Company Car? Apparently Not…

    Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Author - Sal Dhanani - Co-Founder and Sr. Director of Marketing

Car_for_homepage2We issued the results of a survey this week which showed that 94% of business supervisors who manage corporate vehicles do not know where those vehicles are during work hours.

    That’s right … 94%.

When running the survey, we had no idea what to expect but we certainly did not predict that such an astounding majority do not have an eye on their company cars.

You can take your guess at why this is the case - maybe managers are just overworked and don’t have time to monitor vehicles more closely; maybe it’s due to a lack of capable technology; or it could just be the case that many don’t see the need to monitor their fleets. My guess? Probably a combination of these.

Regardless, those 6% who are actively overseeing their vehicles will have a major leg-up on the competition when it comes to:

    • Safety of the vehicle
    • Fuel management
    • Increased productivity
    • Cost reduction
    • Customer service

(check out the press release for more information on why)

What amazes us is why SO many managers aren’t tracking their vehicles when it’s so easy to do it now with GPS.

What do you think? Why are so many managers apathetic when it comes to their mobile assets?
