Consumer Navigation Application of the Year, AT&T Navigator, in action on the Nokia E71x

Just two weeks ago we were patting ourselves on the back for being named Best Mobile Resource Management Solution on a Handheld Device by respected industry analyst firm Frost & Sullivan. While we always remain humble and maintain a fervent drive to improve our products, we thought we would take time out to give ourselves and partner AT&T one more pat on the back as it’s been announced that AT&T Navigator (powered by TeleNav) was selected by Frost & Sullivan as the Consumer Navigation Application of the Year.

AT&T Navigator puts an array of capabilities at your fingertips and is far more than just turn-by-turn directions and a map. Available on a number of AT&T devices, some features of AT&T Navigator include:

    • Speech Recognition - with the simple push of a button you can speak the address or business name and AT&T Navigator will provide voice and on-screen turn-by-turn directions to your destination.
    • Biz Finder - can’t find the best sushi restaurant in town? Don’t worry, AT&T Navigator has more than 10 million business listings complete with reviews and ratings.
    • Daily Gas Prices - with the summer season upon us and gas prices climbing, one great feature of AT&T Navigator is the ability to receive gas price information at stations around your current location.
    • Global Information - AT&T Navigator Global Edition provides 3D Maps of the United States, Mexico and Canada and Icon-mode navigation in Western Europe and China. This edition also supports a number of languages including U.S. English, UK English, Italian, German and Spanish.

We’re pleased that Frost & Sullivan has recognized AT&T Navigator with this award and we’re excited to be powering AT&T’s best selling application. As more phones feature AT&T Navigator, we’re hopeful that users will continue to see the benefits a connected navigation application offers to them.

In another positive piece of news, Frost & Sullivan predicts that U.S. carrier-generated annual revenues for location-based applications will reach approximately $3.3 billion in the consumer sector by 2013. It’s an exciting time for the location based industry and this fast paced growth and innovation are sure to benefit you. What location services would you like to see come to fruition in the coming years?

AT&T Navigator (powered by TeleNav) Maintains Position as Top Selling AT&T Application

    Monday, May 4th, 2009

AT&T announced the company’s top selling applications for Q1 today and AT&T Navigator, powered by TeleNav, was the best selling application for the company during the quarter. The application has been the top application for the company since the middle of last year and in the top ten since launch. AT&T Navigator transforms users’ phones into full-featured personal navigation devices, complete with turn-by-turn directions, voice destination entry, a directory of more than 10 million business listings and points of interest, and real-time traffic information.

Also announced today, Nokia fans will be happy to know that AT&T’s top selling application will be available on their new E71x smartphone, which became available today for AT&T customers at a price of $100. Add in AT&T Navigator for $9.99 a month and E71x users can turn their phone into a multi-function device complete with a navigation experience comparable to stand alone personal navigation devices that require a similar investment. Considering AT&T Navigator maps and POI databases are updated frequently and real-time traffic information is included, it’s a nice, cost effective alternative to owning both a smartphone and GPS device, many of which charge additional fees for map updates and traffic information.

The announcement indicates more and more customers see the benefit of having AT&T Navigator on their phones to use during their daily commute, on vacation or to find reviews of the best restaurants in their towns. Let us know what you think about AT&T Navigator and feel free to share interesting stories of how it has helped you.

Earth Day Question: Can you reduce carbon emissions and save almost $550 per year on gas using GPS?

    Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009
    Source: NAVTEQ

    Source: NAVTEQ

Our content partner NAVTEQ says yes.

NAVTEQ released a study this week showing that drivers using GPS navigation devices saw a 12 percent increase in fuel efficiency, which equals a 91-metric-ton decrease in carbon dioxide emissions every year per driver. According to their calculations, GPS navigation could save drivers 416 euros (about 539 US dollars) per year on gas.

Want to ensure you are using your GPS to the extreme? Make sure you’re getting traffic alerts and rerouting, says NAVTEQ.

The study, conducted in Germany, included more than 2,100 individual trips and almost 500 hours on the road.

In the study, one-third of the participants were given a navigation device, one-third had no device and one-third had a GPS device with traffic receivers. Those with a GPS device drove shorter distances and spent less time driving than those without.

So if you’re already using TeleNav on your phone, you’re helping the Earth and your pocketbook. It’s a good start to keeping our planet green. Happy Earth Day!

About.com: “TeleNav’s Shotgun…provides the best solution I’ve seen for automating mileage tracking and logging”

    Tuesday, April 14th, 2009
Easily track your miles (with just one button) and download later for expense reports

Easily track your miles (with just one button) and download later for expense reports

No one enjoys tax season (except for maybe accountants) and as you put the final touches on your 2008 forms, you may be promising yourself that you will get an earlier start on it next year and keep better records so that it is not so complicated.

If you own a business with vehicles, you can now track and deduct mileage much easier with GPS technology. GPS expert, Fred Zahradnik, writes on his About.com blog that “TeleNav’s Shotgun model car GPS … provides the best solution I’ve seen for automating mileage tracking and logging.”

"TeleNav's Shotgun ... provides the best solution I've seen for automating mileage tracking and logging." -- Fred Zahradnik, About.com Guide to GPS

We also shared some information on using TeleNav Shotgun’s mileage tracking capabilities for your taxes earlier this year. For 2009, the optional standard mileage rates used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile will be 55 cents per mile for business miles driven. For 2008, the business mileage rate was 50.5 cents in the first half of the year and 58.5 cents in the second half.

Depending on your type of business and how many vehicles you use for it, this deduction may really add up. Log 25,000 miles for 2009 for example, and that’s $13,750 in deductions. But accurately keeping track of all of the miles driven for the year is important - and this isn’t always easy.

If you’re in this situation, you may want to take Fred’s advice and consider TeleNav Shotgun. The device connects to the Internet via the wireless network so all of this information is stored for 24 months on your account and can be downloaded from your PC and exported into an Excel or PDF document. This eliminates any manual note taking or scribbles on backs of gas receipts and it also may help you keep more accurate records that are easy to share with the IRS if needed.

Give us a call if you have questions about how the Shotgun can be used for your business. If you’re already using it, let us know what you think. We want to hear your feedback.

Lok8u Unveils New GPS Child Locater Watch

    Wednesday, January 7th, 2009
    The Nu*M8 from Lok8u

    The Nu*M8 from Lok8u

We’ve written in the past on child locater technology and, as a new mom, I am keeping my eye on these gadgets to see if there are any that I may want to consider in the future.

A UK-based company called Lok8u unveiled a new watch today at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

It’s called the Nu*M8 and it’s similar to what we’ve seen in the past in that it comes in the form of a watch. It uses GPS and provides you with the ability to monitor your child’s location online. You can also use text messaging to get the location and you can set up “safe zones.”

What I think really makes it different though is that it will alert you if it is “forcibly” removed from your child - which basically means that you have to deactivate it in order to remove it without an alert being sent. The common concern parents have with GPS devices like watches or cell phones is that it tracks the device, not the child. Other than surgically implanting a GPS chip in your kid (hey, it works for dogs), this may be the next best solution.

Despite the funky name, it looks like a gadget to watch (pun intended). Nu*M8 will cost you about $225 and you’ll also need to pay a subscription fee - ranging from about $7.50 to $30 per month depending on how “heavy” your usage is.
