Cloaked in Mystery - The Story Behind a Local Haunted House

    Friday, October 31st, 2008

Author - Daisy Luu - Technical Writer

Dscf1770She lived with dozens of servants around the clock, and still, she was alone. In 1884, a wealthy widow named Sarah Winchester began commissioning for a mansion to be built - an endeavor that went on for 38 years. The mansion ended up with about 160 rooms, utlilized some surprisingly modern technology (plus a strange mix of architecture), and cost $5.5 million.

William Wirt Winchester, Sarah’s husband, was the heir to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, the artillery weapon dubbed “the gun that won the west.” Because it was responsible for taking so many lives, a curse followed the Winchester family. Sarah’s only daughter died as an infant, and fifteen years later, tuberculosis claied her husband’s life. Obsessed that the vengeful spirits would target her next, Sarah began a mission to build her house, believing she would remain safe as long as construction continued.

Dscf1677That’s what the legends say, anyway. Winchester Mystery House is rooted in oddities. Sarah employed up to 25 carpenters at once and added strange elements such as upside-down banister poles, that led to nowhere, skylights built into floors, and repetitive motifs such as the number 13 and spider-web designs.

Winchester Mystery House has drawn millions of visitors since it was made a public attraction in the 1930’s. As you gear up for some good spooks this Halloween, here is a fun website you can visit to find haunted houses around your area.

Businesses Using GPS to Decrease Operational Budgets Despite Rising Fuel and Shipping Costs

    Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Aberdeen released an interesting study yesterday on fleet operations and the rising costs of fuel and shipping charges.

According to their report (sponsored by TeleNav) 50% of the logistics professionals surveyed are focused - right now - on improving routing and scheduling of their fleets in order to offset rising operational costs.

Almost 100% of them said they will be reviewing and improving fleet operations in the next 12-24 months.

Those companies which Aberdeen entitles "Best-in-Class" (have implemented technology to improve their operations) have been able to reduce safety incidents by 5% and decrease overall freight spend by 1%, despite overall rising costs in the industry.

Route optimization, dispatching, scheduling and fleet tracking are all available through TeleNav Track on GPS-enabled cell phones. TeleNav is working with Aberdeen to help educate companies on how to implement this technology and save on costs. We’re hosting a Webinar with Aberdeen on this topic on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 10am PT. You can find more information and register here.

As a side note, we also announced yesterday another new device that supports TeleNav Track. It is the Intermec CN3 (pictured here). Click here to get more information on this announcement.

TeleNav Featured on San Jose’s KLIV 1590 “The Economy & Silicon Valley Report”

    Monday, September 8th, 2008

    Economy_115_pixels_2

One of our co-founders, Sal Dhanani, is featured today on KLIV 1590 (an affiliate of CNN radio) on the station’s "Economy & Silicon Valley Report." If you’re in San Jose, tune in at 55 past each hour and you will hear him talking about the growth of TeleNav and our industry.

Alternatively (or for those of you not in the Bay Area), you can listen to his interview here:

Is Anyone Keeping an Eye on the Company Car? Apparently Not…

    Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Author - Sal Dhanani - Co-Founder and Sr. Director of Marketing

Car_for_homepage2We issued the results of a survey this week which showed that 94% of business supervisors who manage corporate vehicles do not know where those vehicles are during work hours.

    That’s right … 94%.

When running the survey, we had no idea what to expect but we certainly did not predict that such an astounding majority do not have an eye on their company cars.

You can take your guess at why this is the case - maybe managers are just overworked and don’t have time to monitor vehicles more closely; maybe it’s due to a lack of capable technology; or it could just be the case that many don’t see the need to monitor their fleets. My guess? Probably a combination of these.

Regardless, those 6% who are actively overseeing their vehicles will have a major leg-up on the competition when it comes to:

    • Safety of the vehicle
    • Fuel management
    • Increased productivity
    • Cost reduction
    • Customer service

(check out the press release for more information on why)

What amazes us is why SO many managers aren’t tracking their vehicles when it’s so easy to do it now with GPS.

What do you think? Why are so many managers apathetic when it comes to their mobile assets?

Ambulances Using GPS to Improve Response Times

    Monday, August 18th, 2008

Author—Alex Ognjanac - VP of Sales

Transcare_ambulance_using_telenav_2While average response time for ambulance services varies from city to city, wouldn’t you feel better knowing your local ambulance/emergency response team was using every technology possible to get to you faster when you call 911?

Today we shared news on an ambulance company based in NY that is using GPS-enabled TeleNav Track to do just that - improve ambulance response times and streamline dispatch operations.

The company, called TransCare, is the largest ambulance provider in the northeast region (covering metro NY, the Pennsylvania region and Maryland) and has more than 200 ambulances in operation. Prior to using TeleNav Track, TransCare was using two-way pagers and radio systems to determine where each of their drivers were. This was time-consuming, ineffective and not as accurate.

Now, using TeleNav Track, TransCare can see where their ambulances are 24×7 by logging into a password-protected web site and viewing a map. Ambulances can be quickly and effectively dispatched to emergency situations according to their current location.

In addition, we worked with TransCare to integrate TeleNav Track into its existing dispatching communications system, so that investing in new dispatching technology and training was unnecessary. This is just another example of our TeleNav Track can be customized for each customer.

As you can imagine, knowing where its ambulances are at any given time is critical to TransCare’s success and to the healthcare of its patients. This is not the first ambulance service to use TeleNav Track to improve response times - click here for another case study.

It’s good to know that GPS cannot only help us save time in our daily lives, but can also help save lives … daily.

Frost & Sullivan Helps You Select an MRM Solution

    Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

Author - Sal Dhanani - Co-Founder and Sr. Director of Marketing

Frost_sullivan_logoWe’ve shared many case studies on this blog of how companies of all sizes are using GPS on cell phones to improve their overall operations.

Despite all the success stories we’ve posted, you may still be unsure of how GPS solutions like TeleNav Track could help your business or what to consider when looking at the various options available.

Last week, industry analyst firm Frost & Sullivan issued a paper called "Maximizing ROI with MRM: Selecting the Right Mobile Resource Management Solution" and it may be a tool that can help you sort out any questions you have if you are considering an MRM solution like TeleNav Track.

The paper defines four key MRM purchase criteria and then uses that criteria to compare various options (including TeleNav Track). The paper also provides more information on the ROI that organizations are experiencing with MRM, including reduced fuel and labor costs and improved job completion rates.

Frost & Sullivan finds MRM so compelling that it forecasts over 11 million MRM users in the U.S. alone by 2013 … which means if you aren’t using an MRM solution, your competitors may get a leg up.

As the press release states, you can get a copy of this paper for free by emailing Frost & Sullivan directly. The contact person is Mireya Castilla and her email address is mireya.castilla@frost.com.

CR England Increases Revenue and Improves Customer Satisfaction with TeleNav Track

    Monday, August 11th, 2008

Author - Mary Beth Lowell - Communications Manager

Cr_england_logoWe’ve posted examples like this in the past of how organizations are improving business processes through GPS-enabled TeleNav Track on mobile phones but today’s announcement with trucking company CR England may be one of the best case studies yet.

CR England delivers goods for DHL, Wal-Mart, and other large retailers in the U.S. and Mexico - you may have seen their trucks on the road.

Using TeleNav Track on 80 AT&T BlackBerry smartphones, the company can monitor drivers’ locations and travel activity to provide more accurate information to clients. This has allowed CR England to increase customer satisfaction to 99% and attract $1.8 million in new annual revenues.

In addition, the company has enhanced other aspects of its business using TeleNav Track including clearer customer communication, a boost in staff morale, and an increased focus on innovate and creative ways to improve services.

TeleNav and GPS Assists the Construction Industry

    Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Author - Mary Beth Lowell - Communications Manager

Nobile_constructionWith the housing market the way it is today, buyers and sellers are not the only ones impacted by the turn in the economy. Builders and remodelers have also been affected and must ensure they are doing all that they can to run efficient organizations in order to stay in business.

As GPS has helped other industries save on costs, so has it helped the construction industry. Today, TeleNav announced one such success. A company based in Branford, CT called Nobile Construction is using TeleNav Track to develop more efficient business processes and save on fuel.

One of the features of TeleNav Track that Nobile Construction is leveraging is its GPS-enabled time card capabilities. Nobile’s employees are able to clock-in and clock-out directly from their cell phones. This cuts down on unnecessary trips to and from the home office (saving on gas costs!) and also allows employees to submit their time on a daily basis, improving overall accuracy in job time keeping.

Nobile’s use of TeleNav Track was recently highlighted in a construction magazine called Remodeling Online. This is just another way that TeleNav is helping businesses become more efficient and save on costs.

    GPS Helps Businesses Go Green

    Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Author—Sal Dhanani - Co-Founder and Sr. Director of Marketing

Going_greenWe released results of a survey today that showed that 50% of business managers would implement a GPS solution for their company if they knew it would help the company reduce carbon emissions and become more "green."

Our announcement also higlighted a recent Aberdeen Group study which showed that companies who use services like TeleNav Track have seen a 19.2 percent reduction in miles traveled since using the service. This results in less fuel consumption, which represents nearly 98 percent of the carbon dioxide emitted into the environment.

While you may have your own opinion on what it takes to become green as a consumer or as a business, it’s hard to debate the fact that any reduction in carbon emissions helps our environment. Besides that, many companies are now discovering the business benefits (translation: cost savings) of going green.

If companies can use GPS services like TeleNav Track and TeleNav GPS Navigator to help them improve efficiencies and save money, they really should be considering these solutions.
