Well, the new phones continue to come down the pipeline and the latest is the Samsung Moment for the Sprint Network. The Moment is an Android based device and after having the chance to play around with it, I must say it’s one very slick device. And even better, Sprint Navigation (powered by TeleNav) worked More >

AT&T and Pantech launched a new device this week, the Pantech Reveal, which is Pantech’s first “single-slider” phone. Overall, the phone has a nice feel to it and the inclusion of two key pads, the number pad when the slider is closed and the full keyboard when it’s open, makes it very handy to use. More >

I downloaded the app and will be testing it today. I will be posting a review on my site within the next week. Thanks.

I just installed this on my G1… so far i am LOVING all the new features. I used to have this on my Blackberry Pearl and it was so slow… and no where near as fast as it is on Android. Perfect timing cause I leave for San Fran in two days!!! Can’t wait to run this through it’s paces.

I am impressed with the great quality of this app, and in some ways, this sets the standard for Android software. I used it for a couple of days, but it was all temporary for me. I learned that it will not work with my unlocked G1 on AT&T service. The kind folks (David L, in particular) in customer support tried a great deal but something in the startup validation prevented the app from starting with an AT&T SIM in the phone.
But it all worked well when the G1 had the T-Mobile SIM. Voice recognition was pretty accurate, speech was great (but don’t expect to hear the voice well through the G1 speaker), the maps were accurate and on track. The GPS in the G1 seems to not be as accurate as my standalone PND and Telenav Navigator adapted fairly well to that. As a consequence, it seemed a little too forgiving of GPS accuracy and had a hard time recognizing that I had taken an exit and was driving alongside the highway on the access road rather than the highway route it plotted.
The only feature I found missing is a display of dashboard-like functions: speedometer (yes, that is somewhat redundant) and distance travelled. It does show an ETA.
Overall, it worked very well and I highly recommend it. I only wish it worked for me on AT&T.

Randy – this is excellent feedback. Thank you for sharing it. What device are you using now?

Wow. Very impressive. In the city, maps loaded quickly and was able to follow me as I turned. It picked a few routes I wouldn’t have gone, but were actually shorter. When I went out in the middle of the desert, we lost 3G, so map loading slowed. But if you zoomed out on the maps, it was able to load. I’m sure half the problem was you switch mobile towers every few minutes when doing 80-90 mph (honest officer, I had no clue it was that fast) :) Now, if we could get European maps and red light camera data like the Tom Toms or Garmins, that would be brilliant. It does use more battery, obviously as GPS and backlight are always on, but its one of the few G1 apps to have a true off switch.
I just meant to say I really liked it, but ended up writing a mini-review. :)

Overall I’m impressed with the application. There are times where it seems that the app isn’t getting the best information from the G1′s GPS. Example – At an intersection for a couple of minutes, TeleNav thought I was hundreds of feet away from intersection, but Handstand knew I was at the intersection, and reported accuracy within 6 meters. Within a block resuming TeleNav was back to being spot on.
I wish we had the option to change screen orientation without pulling keyboard out. The “progress” bar seem to only work in landscape mode.
Overall, my initial thoughts are very favorable. I will give it a more thorough workout soon and report back.

@Mary Beth, for GPS, I use a dedicated TomTom One 3rd Edition without the traffic service.
I was hoping to switch to Telenav with the G1 (on AT&T service) and discover that the traffic data integrated into Telenav was fantastic and would help my daily commute.
I can’t comment on the usefulness of the traffic in Telenav, but I can comment on the useLESSness of the Google Maps traffic in San Antonio, Texas. The Google Maps traffic is very outdated and inaccurate, usually lagging by one to three hours behind actual traffic conditions. When you’re driving to work, that is completely useless.
Having thought for years about how an interactive traffic system might work, Dash eventually brought to market such a system. I imagine there may be patent issues, but the timeliness and accuracy of traffic data acquired live from real devices while they’re on the road is what I’m looking for. I hope that Telenav can bring these features to us G1 users.
Mary Beth, it is good to know you’re out there listening. I wish you great success with the G1 / Android version of Telenav.

@AdinaZed – thanks for the great feedback. TeleNav has found shorter routes for me too – that I would have sworn were not the best way to go beforehand. RE: European maps – we do have service in Europe but unfortunately not with the T-Mobile G1 yet.
@Mark – I’ll share this feedback.
@Randy – I can’t tell from your comments – have you tried TeleNav with traffic? The experience will be much different than using traffic on other devices or services. TeleNav will monitor traffic along your specific route (checking every five min for incidents and congestion) – rather than just say, in the San Antonio area. Additionally, if there is traffic, it will offer you the option of choosing a faster route by just clicking one button. Let me know if you’ve tried this and what you think. And thank you for kind words!

@Randy – I just realized that you commented above – and that you have used TeleNav on the G1. When you did, did you try the traffic alerts? Curious to get your feedback.
@Mary Beth: I did drive into work one morning with Telenav and traffic alerts enabled. I got a traffic alert about the congestion, Telenav re-routed, but I did not follow the new route. It was true that my original route had congestion ahead (it usually does), but I also knew that it was still the fastest route.
For me, what would set Telenav apart from other products/services is a very good traffic alert system. It would have to include knowledge of current traffic *speeds* on highways (not just accidents) and the small (or at least mid-capacity) streets. Since Telenav did not show specifics about its traffic data (currency or detail), I don’t have an opinion about its value in the current form.
I sure wish I could run it some more. (hint hint) If you have a need for testing any of this, let me know.
@Randy – it actually will provide detail on speeds, incidents, etc. for each leg of your route where we have data. See here: http://www.telenav.com/products/tn/traffic.html under “Detailed Traffic Info.” At this point, it is very technically challenging to gather traffic data for sidestreets but I’m sure in general traffic gathering processes will improve over time.

@Mary Beth: The page on traffic (that link you sent) is indeed exactly what I’m looking for. Glad to see your company making progress in this area. How does TN get the traffic data?
We use information from a company called Inrix which gathers traffic data from hundreds of public and private sources, including traditional road sensors, GPS-enabled vehicles and cellular probes.

I am not that impressed with this app, the 9.99 is a little steep but I am willing to pay it, however I encountered several issues.
1. I had the trial in the past with my BB, this time around I guess I cannot try it for free on my NEW phone. I have sent numerous emails but I have not received a response.
2. It constantly loses GPS signal, In open sky, on the highway I find my gps without signal. This was bad at one point when I did not know what my next turn was.
3. It is a little slow on the maps. With full 3g signal, if I have an exit coming up and then a left turn, I would exit but the maps would not show me out after i had already missed the left turn. This happened a couple of times. very annoying.
I am contemplating canceling it but since I never got my free month I might as well make use of it.

@Mary Beth: I have been getting the daily commute updates by email and all the traffic speeds are “n/a”, so it looks like the speed data from the service provider does not have good coverage for San Antonio.
@Randy – I’ve confirmed that we have traffic incident data for San Antonio. Does your commute involve a lot of side streets?
@Mary Beth – I only have two side streets in the commute to get out of the neighborhood. After that, it’s all major highways.
There are side streets that I can take when a highway has really slow traffic, but I have to know ahead of time (before getting on the highway), as the alternatives require no highway travel at all – they are purely small & mid-size streets.
The incidents listed are of little value to me on their own. Most of the time, an ancident does not slow traffic considerably. So I usually ignore incident reports. Combined with speed data, they would be more valuable. An incident with slow speed, for example, suggest that the slowness will probably last a while.

In response to Randy’s question above, I am successfully using TeleNav on an unlocked T-Mobile G1 on AT&T. I downloaded the T-Mobile version and it works great!

I would love to have speed displayed on both follow me maps and during navigation. My speedometer doesn’t work so this would be a biggie for me. Other than that I love Telenav.

Thanks Al – I’ll share this with our team. This request seems to be most popular when speedometers are broken. It’s amazing how often that happens. Must be very frustrating. Thanks for the feedback and drive safely!
