  • TeleNav Shotgun: TeleNav’s 1st Internet-Connected GPS Personal Navigation Device

    November 9th, 2008
Author: Sal Dhanani – Co-Founder and Senior Director of Marketing

It’s been a busy year for us and we’re definitely not slowing down.

In fact, today we made quite a big announcement - we’ve officially launched our first GPS personal navigation device (PND) - the TeleNav Shotgun. It’s a 2-way Internet-connected GPS device for business travelers.

    Introducing the TeleNav Shotgun!

    Introducing the TeleNav Shotgun!

If you’ve used TeleNav GPS Navigator, you already know the benefits of having a wireless connection. It means you get access to updated maps and business listings - you don’t have to worry about downloading anything. You also get real-time information including traffic-alerts/rerouting and daily gas price listings.

With TeleNav Shotgun, you get all of this plus a large 4.3″ touch screen. Plus, we’re throwing in three free months of TeleNav Connected Service with the purchase of the device. It’s different than any other PND on the market and we’re really excited to start offering it today. Take it for a spin and let us know what you think.

By the way, still wondering why we called it the Shotgun?

Wow, this looks like the GPS I have been waiting for. Does it get weather info?
Also, can the software run on an iPhone 3g?
How about on a laptop with a Sprint wireless card?

@Thomas - yes, it will include weather information. That feature isn’t currently available but when it is, customers who are connected will automatically be upgraded.

No - this device is completely autonomous right now - does not communicate with other phones or devices. If you are interested in using navigation on your cell phone, check out our TeleNav GPS Navigator service - it’s similar to TeleNav Shotgun but runs on cell phones.

Do you plan on opening this device up as a platform for others to develop apps on top of similar to Dash? My company is looking for a way to track vehicles using an internet connected GPS device. There are many hosted solutions for this, but we want to have the GPS data sent directly to our servers. Many developers would build features that your subscribers could use or buy…

@matt - we have no immediate plans to open the API. You may want to consider something built specifically for tracking purposes though - like TeleNav Vehicle Tracker - see our post from today (http://blog.telenav.com/blog/2008/12/att-and-telenav-launch-telenav-vehicle-tracker/)
