Behind the Scenes with CNET @ Telenav HQ

Among our executive ranks here at Telenav is someone considered by some to be the “father of GPS.” Bob Rennard was the principal engineer in designing the Global Positioning System and is currently our co-founder and Chief Technical Officer. Sit down with Bob for a few minutes and it’s no surprise why he’s deserving of the moniker.

Recently, Brian Cooley, editor at large with CNET, came to our Sunnyvale headquarters to interview Bob about the future of GPS and how Scout is helping us get there.

After his segment with Rennard, Cooley had some hands on time with Scout and our Ford Applink in-car solution. We made our Scout Explorer and Mustang available to him to showcase the full range of capabilities of Scout’s auto integration. The video of the interview as well as Cooley’s impression of Scout can be seen in its entirety here and some behind the scenes images of the event are below.

Telenav Customers on iPhone: UPDATE AVAILABLE TODAY

Summary: The issues some of our iPhone 4S and iPad customers have been experiencing are now resolved. The update is available in the AppStore.

————————————-

Dear Telenav iPhone customers,

I am pleased to report to you today that the issue that impacted some of our iPhone 4S and iPad customers is now resolved. We have posted an update in the AppStore that fixes all of the issues for our Telenav customers. Please download this update when you have a chance.

Thirteen years ago, we began the process of building GPS navigation for mobile devices. That early effort and continuing commitment has allowed us to build one of the best mobile navigation solutions on the planet. Over that time, we have developed a strong relationship with each of you by creating quality products that make it easier to get to the people and places you love. This relationship with you is very important to us. That is why, when one of our recently released products did not achieve our own expectations for some of our iPhone 4S and iPad customers, we took this matter extremely seriously.

Our team worked around the clock to determine the issue and we were able to submit this to Apple within a matter of days. We then worked with Apple to provide whatever they needed to test the application and ensure the issues were fixed.

For those customers who ran into problems, I understand your frustration. I learned how truly passionate our customers are about our products by listening to the many that voiced their opinions and shared their feedback – and I appreciate that.

If you have not already done so, you are also welcome to download Scout by Telenav for a free year of premium service. This offer will end on Friday, September 21, 2012.

Since the moment we started Telenav, our mission has always been to make people’s lives less stressful while on the go. For more than 13 years and for millions of customers, we have been able to do exactly that – create products we could be proud of! However, our most recent update clearly did not meet the standards we built the Telenav name upon and, from that, we will learn to do better with each and every product release.

I realize we have some trust to rebuild and relationships to mend and I promise you, we are fully dedicated to doing what it takes.

From here, we will learn from this and improve so we can prove to you once again, why you chose us.

Best Regards,

HP Jin

REMINDER: If you’ve downloaded the latest version of Telenav for your iPhone or iPad and are stuck on the “Always there” screen, please try this workaround.

——————————————–

Hi Telenav iPhone Customers –

I’d like to provide some clarification about how you can get your one year of Scout Plus for free for a limited time (offer expires 8/25/12 at 11:59pm PST). We’re receiving a lot of questions about this and to make the process simpler, we created a set of step-by-step instructions below on how to do it.

Note that during this process, you’ll be asked to provide a valid email address. Please be sure to double check the spelling.

A few other things to know before you start:

  • Please do not purchase a Scout subscription
  • When registering, enter your valid information (name, email) – Do not press “Skip” at any point

———————————————

How to Claim Your One-Year Free of Scout

———————————————

Step 1: Download “Scout by Telenav” in the AppStore.

———————————————

Step 2: Once downloaded, launch Scout.

———————————————

Step 3: Proceed through the Scout registration process and do not press “Skip” at any point. In order to set you up with your one-free year of Scout, we need your account information and a valid email address.

———————————————

Step 4: At the “Special Offer” screen, select “30 Day Trial.” If you do not see this option, see below.

Please note: If you have previously used the 30 day trial, it will not appear as a selectable option.

If you do not see the 30 day trial option, please select, “No thanks, use Scout without voice guidance.”

Step 5: After tapping “Let’s Go!,” you are finished with the registration process.

———————————————

If in Step 4, you selected the 30-day free trial, you’ll be immediately given access to our premium features including offline maps and lane assist, just to name a few. Also, don’t worry – We’ll set you up with your free one-year subscription before your trial ends.

If instead you didn’t see the 30-day option and, as instructed, selected “No thanks, use Scout without voice guidance,” you’ll need to call our support line at 1-888-353-62841-888-353-6284 to finish setting up your account. Please let our support team know you’re calling about setting up your free one-year subscription to Scout for iPhone and that you would like to be transferred to Tier 2 Support.

If you have any questions about this process, please let us know below. Hope this is helpful.

Thanks,

Dear valued Telenav customers,

We would like to apologize again for the issues that you may be experiencing with the recent update to our Telenav GPS and Telenav GPS Plus apps on the iPhone. We are investigating and testing fixes with Apple. Right now, it appears the issue is limited to iPhone 4S devices. We will continue to work around the clock and during the weekend to determine the root of the issues and to fix them as soon as possible.

We know many of you rely on our service and have found yourself without the GPS navigation service you depend on. We sincerely regret any inconvenience you have experienced due to these issues. We know the experience has been frustrating, to say the least.

While we continue to work on fixing the issues with Telenav GPS, we would like to offer you a potential alternative GPS service.

As you may know, we also have an application on the iPhone called Scout by Telenav. Scout by Telenav is similar to Telenav and includes some unique features like offline navigation, which gives you GPS navigation when you’re outside of wireless coverage.

We would like to offer you the option of a free year of Scout by Telenav premium service (currently $10/year – similar to Telenav GPS). Scout by Telenav has not been impacted by this update. If you are interested, please feel free download Scout by Telenav on your phone (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/scout-by-telenav/id467816643?mt=8) and sign up for the 30-day free demo of the premium upgrade. Anyone who does this within the next week will automatically receive a free year of premium service. After you sign up for the 30-day demo, no additional action is required on your part. We will activate a year of service for you. This offer is available until 11:59pm on Saturday, August 25th, 2012.

(UPDATE: If you have tried the 30 day free trial in the past, the app will unfortunately not let you sign up for the free demo again. If this is the case, please select the free Scout option (“No thanks, use navigation without voice guidance”) and then register with your email address. Once you’ve done this, please call our Customer Care team at 1 888 353 6284 and ask for Tier 2 support. They will be able to activate one year of free service for you. Thank you for your patience through this process.)

We realize that this is not the ideal situation as, unfortunately, the accounts cannot be cross-referenced so we cannot automatically populate your Favorites or Recent Places into your Scout by Telenav account. However, we do want to make sure that you have access to reliable GPS navigation service while we are working on Telenav GPS.

If you are running into problems with downloading Telenav GPS and have not already tried this workound, please do so. We have also found that it may work better if you turn off WiFi on your phone first.

If you are running into billing issues or have questions about refunds, please call our Customer Care team at 1 888 353 6284 and ask for Tier 2 support.

Thank you again for your ongoing patience and, on behalf of everyone at Telenav, I apologize again for the inconveniences you have experienced this week. We value your business and will do everything we can to remedy the situation as quickly as possible.

Please continue to check back to our community and our blog for updates on Telenav GPS.

All the best,

HP Jin, CEO

Hi everyone –

We realize that there are many of you who are very frustrated about the latest update to our Telenav iPhone app and understandably so. It certainly has not provided the type of experience we’re proud of and we’re doing everything we can to fix this.

Since the update, our team has been working around the clock to remedy these issues and as soon as we have more information, we’ll update everyone here on our blog, our community, Facebook, & Twitter.

In the meantime, we wanted to answer some common questions we’re receiving about this update here on our blog. We hope you find this useful.

Once again, we apologize to all of our customers and we hope to have more information for you soon.

Best,

Kenji from Telenav

————————————

Q: I have an existing premium subscription to Telenav on my iPhone but since the latest update, it’s asking me to upgrade my account again. What should I do?

A: This billing error is occurring for some people, but not everyone. If you have an existing subscription and are being prompted to upgrade your account for premium features, please do not repurchase the subscription as it will charge you again. It will also not recognize your previously existing premium subscription.

————————————

Q: What should I do if I’ve paid for a premium subscription twice?

A: If prior to the latest update, you had a paid for a one-year subscription but after it, you were prompted to pay for a new subscription and did, please contact our support line at 1 888 353 6284. Please ask to be transferred to a Tier 2 support representative for a refund request.

————————————

Q: I’m stuck on the “Almost there” screen. What should I do?

A: Our team is looking to fix this bug ASAP. In the meantime, please see this workaround which some have found to work.

————————————

Q: I’m able to download the updated Telenav for iPhone but when I try to load a navigation route, nothing happens. What should I do?

A: If you’re seeing this issue, please completely exit out of the app and restart your route in a new area – ideally outside with a full view of the sky. This should resolve your issue. If it does not, please call our support line at 1 888 353 6284.

————————————

Q: I’d like to talk about a refund. Who can I speak to?

A: If you have any questions about refunds, please call our support line at 1 888 353 6284. Please ask to be transferred to a Tier 2 support representative for a refund request.

————————————

Q: Why don’t you just roll back the app to the previous version?

A: Unfortunately, from a technical perspective, there is no way to do this

————————————

Q: Is there an ETA to fix?

A: Our team is working around the clock to remedy these issues. As of right now, we don’t have an estimated timeline but we are doing everything we can to fix this for our customers. We hope to have more information for you all soon and will continue to post the latest information here.

————————————

Q: Did you not beta test this upgrade?

A: As with all of our products, we hold an extensive beta test program where we test our app to ensure it is at a level our customers expect from us.  Unfortunately, in this case we did not happen to have a tester that matched the criteria required which would have allowed these issues to reveal themselves.

As we continue to improve our products, we promise you we will broaden our beta testing.

Telenav on iPhone: Known Issues & Temporary Fix for Customers Stuck on “Almost There” Screen

Hi everyone -

Kenji from Telenav here with some information for those of you who haven’t already received it.

Our team is aware that after the latest update to Telenav for the iPhone (GPS by Telenav & Telenav GPS Plus), some of our customers are running into the two following problems:

  • Download freezes on the “Almost there” page
  • Premium subscription may not be recognized AND customers may be prompted to purchase the premium subscription even if they have an existing one: PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE AGAIN

We’re very sorry about any inconveniences this may cause and please be assured our team is doing everything to fix these problems.

Temporary Fix: Stuck on “Almost there” screen
For those of you who are currently running into the issue where your download freezes on the “Almost there” page, some customers have reported that doing a hard-close and restarting the app has helped.

To perform a “force kill” of our app, please follow these instructions:

**** PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR iPHONE’S WIFI IS OFF. To turn this off, go to the iPhone’s Settings Menu.

1. From your iPhone home screen, double tap the home button. A row of app icons will appear on the bottom of the screen.

2. Find & hard press (push & hold) the Telenav GPS app icon until it begins to “shake” and small red icon appears in the upper left hand corner of the app.

3. Tap the red icon on the Telenav GPS app icon. It should now disappear from the row of app icons.

4. Tap the home button twice to return to your iPhone home screen.

5. Find and relaunch Telenav GPS.

If this workaround does not fix the issue, Telenav iPhone customers experiencing this issue can take up this offer from our CEO: http://blog.telenav.com/blog/?p=2254

Once again, we’re very sorry for any inconveniences or problems our latest updates may have caused and please be assured we’re doing everything we can to fix it.

Celebrating in Style: Our New Headquarters!

Life is either a great adventure or nothing. – Helen Keller

Recently, Telenav’s 2012 kickoff celebration and campus inauguration took place with one idea in mind – adventure! The party, held during mid-week, was a great way to close out our first month at our new office and featured a night filled with good food, great cake, smiling people and, of course, a conga line. Why the celebration? The evening was dedicated to three things: 1) To celebrate the start of 2012, 2) Telenav’s new headquarters and 3) the launch of our newest product, Scout!

The two-hour event started off with a formal ribbon cutting ceremony by our very own CEO, HP Jin. Speaking to the Telenav team of close to 200 in front of our new headquarters, HP shared his excitement about 2012 and the journey the company is set to embark on this year. With our Scout-wrapped Ford Explorer sitting out front of HQ, the team gathered around HP as he kicked off the campus inauguration by cutting a yellow ribbon to call 950 De Guigne, our official new home.

Following the ribbon cutting, the celebration moved into the main dining area, where for one night, our office was transformed into “Club Telenav.”

With fluorescent flashing lights, an entertaining DJ duo and chic furniture to complement multiple gourmet food and drink stations, Club Telenav was rockin’ and hanging out with the Telenav team definitely made for a fun, refreshing night. Oh, and how could we forget the variety of Telenav cakes – banana cream, chocolate and vanilla!

To cap off the night, dancing took over the room with silly footwork, cheerful laughter and a conga line that will be remembered for months to come. Until of course, the next one.

I want to give a special shout out goes to Kelly Valentine, Telenav’s own expert event organizer, who put together a splendid night filled with fun moments, good times and a glimpse of even more of both to come.
