More Fords with Telenav hitting the road
Are you a Ford fan? If so, we’ve got great news for you. The auto giant just launched two more vehicles with MyFord Touch. As many of you know, when customers opt for SD Card navigation, they get Telenav to help them find, drive and discover what’s around them.
MyFord Touch with our connected navigation software is one of the first systems to include real-time information like updated POIs, live traffic and weather. In addition, it comes with Eco-Route, which displays three routes – fastest, shortest and the most eco-friendly – to the destination.
Last week, our friends at Ford introduced the Focus Electric, the company’s first EV (stands for electric vehicle vs. hybrid, which uses battery and gas). The most impressive part of the this car is that the battery can be completely recharged in 3 to 4 hours, meaning a full charge will cost about $2 to $3 or about 4 cents per mile.
Another great addition to the Ford (and Telenav) line-up is the completely redesigned Escape for 2013, which now includes MyFord Touch. The outgoing Escape was one of the hottest selling small SUVs on the market and Ford has high hopes for the new model. One very unique feature of the new Escape is the hands-free liftgate (check out the video)!
So far our navigation is available in nine 2013 Ford and Lincoln vehicles including the Ford Focus, Taurus, Escape, Edge, Explorer, Flex, and Lincoln MKZ, MKX, MKT with more are on the way!

Waypoint 2012 Recap: Shaping Our Products with Help from Tech Media
Ever look at our products and wonder why we decide to do the things we do?
Maybe you look at the layout of our Scout app and wonder why it was designed the way it was.
Or maybe it’s something else. Perhaps you’re curious about why we decided to add a certain feature.
So how do we actually make decisions about our products? It’s simple really. Most of the time, they are made by listening to and speaking with the people who use our products.
Simple, right?
One of the groups we regularly gather this type of feedback from are the members of our Waypoint program – which is made up of tech media from all over the U.S.
As part of the Waypoint program, recently we held our annual Waypoint event in San Francisco, where we invited all of the members to come check out some of the things we’re working on and then let us us know what they think.
During the two day event, the attendees heard from and spoke with a variety of people, ranging from our Scout for Smartphones, Cars, and Scout.me product teams, all the way up to our CEO, HP Jin, and our partners from Ford and Life360.
Thank you to everyone who attended this year’s event in San Francisco. We’re very thankful you were able to attend and certainly appreciate you coming and hanging out with us!
Curious about this year’s Waypoint event? Check out the video below. In it, you get to see what the event was like and hear why many of the Waypoint members like to attend.
Enjoy!

Getting Ready for Waypoint 2012
Imagine this. 18 of the nation’s leading mobile bloggers & tech journalists all coming together for two epic days in San Francisco.
What possibly could bring together such an incredible group of tech-minded awesomeness?
One word: Waypoint.
What exactly is Waypoint?
Simply put, Waypoint is a program where we invite a group of tech media into our walls to see and help shape the future of our products.
To support the program, we host an annual event, where we invite our Waypoint members to join us in the Bay Area to share with them our current projects, product line up, and future concepts.
This year, our Waypoint event begins next Monday, April 16th.
Over the course of the two day event, our Waypoint members will hear from and speak to key members of our company. Everybody from our CEO to our various mobile, auto, and web team members will share withthe “Waypointers.”
And then, they’ll let us know what they think.
One of the biggest benefits of the Waypoint program is that it opens communication with our Waypoint members and it results in honest feedback. Sometimes we find that the Waypoint members agree with our projects and other times, they’re happy to provide us with constructive criticism. Either way, we love these conversations and are extremely thankful to our Waypoint members for providing us with their honest opinions. In the past, they have even helped make changes to our products.
Why get a group like this together?
Simply put, it’s because we’re always looking for ways to improve our products for our customers and what better way to do it then by gathering some of the smartest people in tech and asking their opinions?
What do our Waypoint attendees think of the event?
Watch this video as last year’s Waypoint attendees tell you in their own words.
(If you’re interested in seeing what the 2010 attendees thought of our first Waypoint event, check it out here.)
Waypoint begins on Monday in San Francisco! As you could imagine, we’re really looking forward to the event.

Supporting Angels on Stage – An Incredible Organization
As part of our 2011 Corporate Philanthropy efforts, we recently donated proceeds to Angels on Stage, a “theater troupe of children with differing abilities.” Founder DeAnna Pursai started the non-profit in honor of her sister, Angel Ellenberger, with the goal of providing a musical and artistic outlet to help youths with disabilities gain personal confidence and self-esteem. Angels on Stage also seeks to raise awareness of special-needs children, receiving funds from the community, families, and local donors by putting on an annual production of a classic play.
Now in its 4th season, Angels on Stage recently performed their rendition of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland. When I stepped into the Center of Performing Arts at Evergreen Valley College, it was bedecked with whimsical artwork for the play: a cloth backdrop of giant mushrooms and flowers, a wacky road sign representing the frenetic, late, and lost nature of the White Rabbit (need Telenav there, Mr. Rabbit?), a row of decorated top hats along the windowsill in honor of the Mad Hatter, and a poster board with biographies of all the Angel stars.
The lavish set and wonderful costumes were just some of the delights of the afternoon. The stage came alive as the Angels recited their lines with gusto, getting the audience to sing “Zippety-Do-Dah” along with the bubble-blowing caterpillar and laugh at the comical routine of Tweedle-Dum and Tweedle-Dee. It was a professional production and yet totally relaxed in its execution. If an Angel forgot his or her line, it was okay; a head directory whispered the prompt to them below stage. If they forgot where they were supposed to go, a Buddy Coach volunteer who entered the scene with them would gently guide them. There was an atmosphere of support and nurturing, allowing the youths to have fun and shine as the stars on stage. At one point, the Mad Hatter halted mid-line to wave and send a shout out to her grandmother in the audience. Here were kids breaking out of their secluded, shy shells to show the world what they are capable of.
Often throughout the play, audience participation was encouraged, bridging the line between actors and patrons, binding them together as a unit. The Cheshire Cat (Head, Body, and Tail) sashayed through the rows of seats, handing out wrapped gifts of Angels on Stage paraphernalia. I ended up being the recipient of a gift in commemoration of my Un-Birthday, courtesy of Wonderland. There’s nothing quite like shaking hands with these youths after their heart-felt performance, meeting the founder to congratulate her on a show well done, and stepping into the warm sunlight of a clear day with blue skies and the lyrics to “Painting the Roses Red” looping in your head. Holding on to your Un-Birthday present, and being reminded that life is a gift, to be filled with meaning and laughter, to be enjoyed to its fullest.

Celebrating in Style: Our New Headquarters!
Life is either a great adventure or nothing. – Helen Keller
Recently, Telenav’s 2012 kickoff celebration and campus inauguration took place with one idea in mind – adventure! The party, held during mid-week, was a great way to close out our first month at our new office and featured a night filled with good food, great cake, smiling people and, of course, a conga line. Why the celebration? The evening was dedicated to three things: 1) To celebrate the start of 2012, 2) Telenav’s new headquarters and 3) the launch of our newest product, Scout!
The two-hour event started off with a formal ribbon cutting ceremony by our very own CEO, HP Jin. Speaking to the Telenav team of close to 200 in front of our new headquarters, HP shared his excitement about 2012 and the journey the company is set to embark on this year. With our Scout-wrapped Ford Explorer sitting out front of HQ, the team gathered around HP as he kicked off the campus inauguration by cutting a yellow ribbon to call 950 De Guigne, our official new home.
Following the ribbon cutting, the celebration moved into the main dining area, where for one night, our office was transformed into “Club Telenav.”
With fluorescent flashing lights, an entertaining DJ duo and chic furniture to complement multiple gourmet food and drink stations, Club Telenav was rockin’ and hanging out with the Telenav team definitely made for a fun, refreshing night. Oh, and how could we forget the variety of Telenav cakes – banana cream, chocolate and vanilla!
To cap off the night, dancing took over the room with silly footwork, cheerful laughter and a conga line that will be remembered for months to come. Until of course, the next one.
I want to give a special shout out goes to Kelly Valentine, Telenav’s own expert event organizer, who put together a splendid night filled with fun moments, good times and a glimpse of even more of both to come.
Live from CES 2012 – Introducing Scout: Your Daily Personal Navigator
Do you remember 1999?
It was the year:
- Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace was highest grossing film at the box office
- John Elway led the Denver Broncos to a Super Bowl Victory over the Atlanta Falcons
- The Furby was the “must have” gift of the holiday season
- The Backstreet Boys were at the height of their teen heart-throb peak, owning the most successful album of the year
- The Y2K scare that everyone in a panic
One other thing about 1999? It was the year that four regular guys founded Telenav when they saw a chance to use the emerging mobile & GPS technology to change the way we navigated through our lives.
Taking a look back…
The four original founders of Telenav were HP Jin, Bob Rennard, Y.C. Chao, and Sal Dhanani and to the group, each brought a unique skill set. HP brought an expertise in location and wireless internet technologies, as well as several years a senior business strategist. Bob, on the other hand, was the engineer of the bunch and was one of the original designers of the Global Positioning System, which is why we fondly call him ‘the father of GPS’. Y.C. brought extensive experience in navigation technology implementation, as well as software and hardware development. And last but not least, Sal brought years of experience in product marketing, product management, business strategy and operations within the telecom industry. With this team in place, our co-founders were ready.
Um… ready to do what exactly?
Well, from the start, these four had one mission in mind: To make people’s lives easier, less stressful, more fun, and more productive when they are on the go. Simple, right?
As we reflect 12 years later, we feel like we’ve done a pretty good job of fulfilling our original mission. We’ve created TeleNav GPS Navigator, two of the top rated navigation iPhone apps, and we power several popular mobile navigation apps across almost every major U.S. mobile phone carrier. Not bad, right?
Reflecting upon our journey since 1999, we’re pretty proud of how far we’ve come and what we’ve been able to accomplish.
Taking a look ahead…
But now, it’s 2012 and the world is a different place than when we set out in 1999. It’s connected, it’s real-time, and the way we relate to the world is very different. We now live in a time where we access information from multiple screens at several different points our day – on the computer, on the web, and when we’re on the go with our mobile device.
These are huge shifts in how we operate throughout our day and it’s really changed the way we live our lives. But despite all of these shifts in technology, one thing hasn’t changed – our mission to make people’s lives easier, less stressful, more fun, and more productive when they are on the go.
Now, as we ring in 2012, I’m excited to share with you that we have announced – live at CES – the next step in our commitment to our mission and to you. Today we unveiled Scout, the first daily personal navigator that will be seamlessly available on your phone, your computer, and in your car.
What is Scout exactly?

Announcing the world’s first browser-based voice guided turn-by-turn navigation & how you can join our select developer’s program! #HTML5
Imagine this. You’re traveling and using your mobile phone and you discover a great restaurant you want to try. Now, what if on that restaurant’s mobile website, they made it easy for you to get there by adding a feature which instantly launches a free 2D voice guided navigation session directly from your mobile browser? It’s a simple process and in the time it took to write this sentence, you would already be on your way to satisfying your empty stomach.
Different situation. Imagine you’re a developer of a mobile website or of an app with local content – maybe you run a website with restaurant reviews or a mobile travel app. What if, by just adding one line of code, you could integrate a full GPS turn-by-turn voice-guided navigation service experience into your website? That way, without having to open any other apps or programs, your audience can have an easy way to get to destinations important to you.
Well, whether you’re a developer of a location-based website or app that focuses on things like travel, shopping, local search, deals, or connecting people via social media, or just a customer who wants an easy way to get to the important people and places, you’ll want to hear this. Today I’m happy to let you know that we’ve created the first HTML5 browser based navigation service for mobile devices!
With our new navigation service, it’s easy to get anyone with a HTML5 supported mobile browser just about anywhere – without having to leave your website or do any additional searches multiple other applications.
HTML5 Browser Navigation Features
Included in the new service are a lot of the features you’ve come to expect from us – navigation with full-color moving maps, spoken directions and automatic rerouting if you miss a turn. The best part? It’s all absolutely free.
Developers: Want access to our new service?
Are you a developer interested in playing with our new HTML5 service? We’d like to partner with you! We’re currently looking for select mobile software developers to test and provide feedback for our APIs and help shape the future of location based services. For more information, please go to www.telenav.com/developer/HTML5 and follow the instructions.
As for when it will be available publicly, we expect to open it up in early 2012.
As you could imagine, here at TeleNav, we’re pretty excited about this because our goal has always been to make it easier for people to get to places most important to them and with this announcement, we’re confident we’re helping to fulfill that. Whether you’re a business that wants an easier way to connect customers with locations or you’re a person who just wants an easier way to get around, our free mobile web browser-based turn-by-turn navigation service can help do both.
Special thanks to our team here for making this possible. This is a great accomplishment and kudos to you for your tireless work on this project.
Have any questions about our new service? Let me know below and I’ll do my best to get you an answer.
